Activism may be the first new art form of the twenty-first century. But how are things made public? The new cinematic forms suggest that traditional cinema no longer has the capacity to represent events that are themselves complex configurations of experience, interpretation, and interaction. The fact that technology allows us to transcend the limits of natural perception and see what was previously unseeable creates a new dimension of aesthetic experience and practice: molecular aesthetics. This volume offers systematic and interdisciplinary reflections on these new image worlds and new analytical approaches to the visual. The book begins with an extensive overview by volume editor Peter Weibel that considers the history of sound as media art, examining work by visual artists, composers, musicians, and architects alike. And are appropriate for every type of celebration or event; weddings to backyard barbecues. The industrial aesthetic of machinery and material has been transformed into an aesthetic of media and molecules. Instead of looking for democracy only in the official sphere of professional politics, they examine the new atmospheric conditions—technologies, interfaces, platforms, networks, and mediations that allow things to be made public. In a time of political turmoil and anticlimax, this book redefines politics as operating in the realm of things. It was there, in 1973, well before any other university had a program explicitly devoted to media art, that Gerald O'Grady founded a media study program that is now legendary.
